Geros Association, in cooperation with The Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra and The Romanian Musicians’ Association of Performers’ Creation (UCIMR), announces the 3rd edition of the innovative Orchestra’s Conductor Competition. This new, unique democratic format in orchestral conducting competitions aims to empower orchestra members by allowing them to choose the winners, emphasising artistic merit and mutual respect.

Each year, the project travels to a different orchestra, giving conductors the opportunity to conduct different musicians and to be part of a different chemistry, which is always unique between a conductor and an ensemble.

The 3rd edition of this competition will be held in Oradea, from April 26 to May 2, and will gather on the State Theatre stage conductors from all around the globe, cultural institutions’ managers and gifted musicians. Under the esteemed direction of Maestro Cristian Oroșanu, the competition seeks to discover and foster gifted conductors from around the globe.

Regardless of the artistic objectivity of the members of an external jury, it is rarely the case that the results of the competition correspond with the opinion of the majority of musicians in the orchestra. However, it is not the jury but the orchestra who will spend a week working with one or more of the finalists during the seasons following the competition.

Phase 1

After more than 200 enrolled candidates from around the world who registered online, 75 musicians were selected for the final phase by a team formed by the president of the competition, a representative of the host orchestra and an internationally recognised conductor. For the 2024 edition of the competition, Vittorio Parisi was part of the selection team. They will compete between 26-28 April in Oradea.

Phase 2 – Semi-final and Final of The Orchestra’s Conductor Competition

The first 18 candidates will be accepted to go through to the semi-final round, performing between April 29 – May 1. 3 candidates with the highest scores will go for the final, consisting of a dress rehearsal in the morning and a final concert in the evening of Thursday, May 2, open to the audience. For the concert, there will be three blocks of 2 works, each one with an orchestral piece and a piece with a soloist (violist Răzvan Popovici). The 3 finalists will conduct selected works from a repertoire determined by drawing lots, including pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gustav Theodore Holst, Max Christian Friedrich Bruch or Carl Maria von Weber, demonstrating their skill in a limited timeframe.

Selection in the first round of the final stage will be carried out by 5 musicians of the orchestra (forming a string quintet). All musicians of the Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra will have the right to vote in both the semi-final and the final rounds, even if not playing, provided they attend every rehearsal and performance by every competitor, which is a testament to the competition’s democratic ethos.

Prizes of The Orchestra’s Conductor Competition

The First Prize consists of €2,500, two guest concerts with the Oradea Philharmonic, and potential engagements with other orchestras. The Second Prize consists of €2,000, one guest concert with the Oradea Philharmonic. The Third Prize consists of €1,500 and the possibility of being invited by other orchestra directors who will attend the final round of the competition.

This year’s event will feature prominent attendees, including Jonas Grunau of Grunau & Paulus Music Management, Germany, and Duygu Esekar of LocksBridge Artist Management, Turkey. Directors from various international orchestras will also attend, scouting for new conducting talents. Managers of respected orchestras expressed their interest in coming to the final round of the competition, such as Silvia Sbarciu, director of Cluj Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania), Akgün Çavuş, director of Olten Philharmonic Orchestra (Turkey), Gyorgy Lendvai, director of MAV Symphony Orchestra Budapest (Hungary), Vlad Mateescu, director of Ploiesti Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania), Szep Gyula, director of Hungarian Opera Cluj (Romania), Georgios Balatsinos, chief conductor of Sorbisches National-Ensemble (Germany), Christo Pavlov, director of Vratsa Symphony Orchestra (Bulgaria) and Florin Estefan, director of National Romanian Opera Cluj (Romania).
